One of my most proud home design projects would have to be my 11 month old son, A.C.’s, nursery. I don’t know if it was because it involved the most important and happiest change of my life, or possibly because it kept me busy in my 3rd trimester when I was tired, the size of a small rhinoceros, and chomping at the bit to meet him. For whatever reason, a lot of love and energy went into this room transformation, and even though it was completed nearly a year ago, I am still excited to share it with my readers.
The inspiration for the room began with the beautiful quilt made by my Aunt Susan, an amazing, award winning quilter. From there I decided on gray and white color scheme with orange accents. I wanted the room to be neutral enough that color accents could change, and allow me to bring bright objects in to create visual stimulation for A.C. The gray and white crib is from Pottery Barn Kids. I chose this style for it’s mid-century feel, which compliments my 1950’s home. The wall behind the crib is painted with gray and white stripes to create a visual interest without having to hang artwork. I went with a shade of gray that was rather dark, but with a hint of blue in the color that actually creates a light and bright feeling throughout the room.
To coordinate with the crib is a dresser/changing table , also from Pottery Barn Kids, that will grow with A.C. long after he is done with diapers. The painting above the changing table was done by my mother. When A.C. was a newborn, he was completely hypnotized by that painting. I only wish he was that still when I change his diaper now! Two of my friends babies who also had their diapers on that table were also drawn to the painting. Apparently my mother is some sort of baby whisper painter. Who knew?
The bookcase, which is also from Pottery Barn Kids, holds A.C.’s books and storage baskets that house many of his toys. A.C. has recently discovered that he can get these baskets out and remove toys himself…now if I could only get him to learn to put them back! Objects on top of the bookcase include the pop of orange lamp from Overstock, which I attached to a dimmer and has been the perfect low light for middle of the night nursing sessions that finally seem to be coming to an end. I say that with a bit of mixed emotion, but mostly happiness to be getting a full nights sleep. Also on the bookcase are mom and baby wooden giraffes which are handmade and from a small gallery in my parents home town of Granville, OH. Lastly there is a painting that was done by my mom’s best friend, Sandy Packer, nearly 40 years ago and was in my nursery as a baby.
In the corner by the crib, is a rocking chair and ottoman what are as comfortable as they attractive. These along with the brightly accented orange and gray rug are from Overstock. The room is completed with a few other colorful accents including the giraffe rocker, which was a gift from my sister, and the colorful tee-pee from Amazon, which is A.C.’s favorite hiding place.
A.C.’s nursery has been a cozy sleeping spot and fun play area for him so far, and hopefully will be a room that will be versatile as he grows. It has also become the family hub where in addition to A.C., you will often find myself, my fiance, and our standard poodle hanging out as well.
