It believe it was roughly 5 years ago when I was chatting with an over 40 friend of mine about how totally appalled we were that crop tops were coming back in style. I did wear them the last time around in high school when you just weren’t cute if you didn’t have that inch of two of belly between your t-shirt and jeans. But come one, are we really doing this again as adults? Well after several years of resistance and a 15 pound weight loss, I am a proud wearer of crop tops this season!
As fashion proportions seem to be evolving over the past few seasons, we have been be trading our low-mid rise bottoms for high-waisted shorts, skirts, and pants. This is making it possible to wear tops just a little shorter. Here are a few tips for pulling off this look appropriately as an adult:
Wear high-waisted bottoms:
I love to wear full high waisted skirts with crop tops. I think a midi length skirt is a great look because it makes the modesty of the skirt look sexy with a little bit of waistline exposed. Also, high-waisted tie shorts or pants are a great pairing with crop tops. When you have so much happening on your waistline with the bow, it’s better to not have the hemline of your top interfering. Also, I find that when I tuck something into tie waist bottoms, it tends to be too much bulk at the waistline. This makes the crop top a great solution.
Show just a peek of your waistline:
I am comfortable with just an inch or so showing, and more in the front than the back. Also, its best to show the narrowest part of your waist. Preferably the part above your belly button, save the belly button exposure for the kids!
Make sure it fits:
Whatever you do, make sure what you are wearing both the top and bottom in your true size. Skin squeezing out is not a good look for anyone! This means that if you have to go a size up, don’t be afraid. I do shop at a lot of places that sell junior sizes like Forever 21 and Shein. These stores are perfect for fast fashion items that you may only wear one season or two. Even though I am a 6-8 in real life, clothes from these stores run small and I usually buy a large. In order to get away with shopping here at 40, the clothes must fit!
Below are a few of my favorite crop top looks from this season that are sure to inspire you to show an inch of waistline. I am saying yes to crop tops for looking and feeling cool in the hottest months of the year!
