I realized recently when sifting through my closet that apparently I am in a pink moment. Although this color is usually reserved for the spring, I am finding that especially right now, wearing pink feels just right. Although some of the clothes I am sharing in this post are more summer in nature, many of the pictured items can be carried into cooler temps easily, and especially the paler shade of pink featured is brilliant next to traditional fall shades.
As I began thinking about this post, I couldn’t help but be inspired by the 1986 John Hughes film, Pretty in Pink. I have always loved this movie for many reasons, but my favorite part is when Molly Ringwald can’t afford to buy a dress to go to the prom with her dream date, she makes a dress of her own. The dress she makes is unique, quirky, and far more sophisticated than the average 1986 prom dress. She looks stunning, fashionable, and carries herself with confidence as she wears it. The lesson of this scene, for me, is that style has nothing to do with the amount of money one has, but the attitude and confidence that individual has to stand out in a crowd wearing what they love. This has always been a fashion value of mine. Below is an image of the dress along with scenes from the film:
These two dresses below were originally the ones that inspired me to write this post. Both of them have been hanging in my closet since last spring, and were never worn. Somehow they seem better as fall looks to me with their long sleeves. I also love both of them with light suede booties as shown here, or later in fall with my flat suede knee high boots similar to these. The first dress pictured was the one that made me think of Molly Ringwald’s “Pretty in Pink” prom dress for it’s lace detail at the top.
The next 2 tops are in keeping with the pink theme. The tunic pictured is a perfect beach cover up, and it is also great paired with boyfriend jeans or distressed denim shorts as shown. The off the shoulder top is a great option for casual evenings and pairs well with blue, black, or white denim.
Of course what is a story about pink that doesn’t include flowers and some fun pink accessories? Since I live with all men (even my poodle is a boy), there is no room for pink in my interior decorating. That is why fresh pink flowers are the best way to “girl up” a space.
This last look is truly my favorite because it is the one that makes me feel the most “Pretty in Pink”. When I was shooting this dress down on the beach and the wind was blowing perfectly, I was hearing the song “Pretty in Pink” by the Psychedelic Furs between the sound of crashing waves.
I believe the best rule of fashion is to wear what you want, when you want, as long as you do it with confidence. That is why I am currently feeling “Pretty in Pink” … And cue the Psychedelic Furs… Click here to listen.
