A funny thing happened to me when I began creating this blog. I have loved fashion my whole life, and I definitely have a specific style aesthetic that is me, but I never really thought about how I would describe that in words. When Shari at Little Blue Deer, the designer I collaborated with to create the design of this site, asked me about how I wanted my page to look, I started to think about this a little more in depth. Obviously I wanted the style of my site to reflect my personal style, but how would I describe that? I finally landed on this: Vintage, Bohemian, Nautical, Glam. Fortunatly, somehow that made sense to Shari and I really feel she captured my style in the graphics of this site.
So what does that really mean? First, the vintage part. I have a love affair with vintage styles, especially from the 60’s and 70’s. You will often see this influence throughout my blog posts. When it comes to the 60’s, I can’t get enough shift style A-line dresses in my life, and style icons like Jackie Kennedy and Twiggy (even though I am anything but twiggy) are to me, great influencers of the 60’s fashion.
The 70’s influences for me are broad. Several years back, I binge watched early episodes of the Mary Tyler Moore Show on Netflix and I realized how many of her clothes I would have in my closet if only I had lived in that era. My closet is lined with styles like jumpsuits, maxi dresses, bohemian dresses and blouses, all often with bold prints.
Bohemian is word that needs to stand on it’s own, even though it is part of the 70’s vintage look as well. Living in California, the climate is often just right for a flowing bohemian blouse over cutoffs or skinny jeans. This is often my go to look. Elements like off the shoulder, peasant styles, lace up ties and tassels are all details that are part of my bohemian style. I am also drawn to colorful floral prints and embroidery in my wardrobe..
The next style element is nautical, which is also the theme of Style Nav. I live at the beach part time, so this influences both the bohemian and nautical parts of my style. I have never met a striped anything that I wasn’t drawn to, and you will notice several shades of blue not only in my wardrobe, but also in and around my homes.
Lastly, there is often a touch of glam to my look, whether it is a gold belt buckle, a great piece of jewelry, a Grecian sandal, a designer bag, or some other great accessory that adds to my look, without being fussy or overdone.
I have always enjoyed pulling together my outfit for the day, and even as I have journeyed though motherhood over the past 10 months, I still take pride in getting dressed. Although not nearly as glamorous as my full-time working days, I strive NOT to remain in my active wear for the duration of a day. Using my creativity when getting dressed makes me feel amazing, and I hope to inspire you use express your personal style and feel amazing as well. So how would you describe your style? I would love to hear your comments!
